What’s Happening Between the U.S. and China?

The U.S. and China are now caught in another round of tit-for-tat tensions—this time, over shipping fees. Both countries have started charging extra port fees on each other’s ships. It’s a move that’s shaking up global trade routes and adding more uncertainty to an already tense economic relationship.


Why Now?

This didn’t come out of nowhere. There’s been growing frustration on both sides over trade imbalances, economic pressure tactics, and strategic competition. Recently, the U.S. began charging Chinese ships more for using American ports. In response, China hit back with similar fees—but only on non-Chinese-built or flagged vessels, clearly aimed at the U.S.
